2013 AMERICAN GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AND ITS DIFFERENCES FROM THE ONE IN 1995 =

Abstract

ABSTRACT Being one of the most powerful and influential countries in the world, along with having quite complicated and unique political system, The United Stated of America has always been the central of hot debates and discussion. As a matter of fact, this research is an effort to bring a deep look on the US political system, especially its newly incident- government shutdown in 2013 which had remarkably lower the country’s international status and power. Through examining the process of the shutdown, this research brings to light the direct and indirect reasons of the problem and its impacts to the socio-economy of the US. Moreover, 2013 was not the first time the American went through a shutdown, hence a little comparison between this and the nearest shutdown in US history will be made in order to find out why the situation repeated. Accordingly, this paper requires the synthesis, collation and summary of existing materials involving previous research reports, newspaper, magazines, online articles and government statistics on the government shutdown. By doing so, the finding discloses that the shutdown had brought down the prestige of the country not only in the international field but also in the heart of its own citizens. In term of economy, it was more or less a hard hit to the US economy, especially when the country just slightly recovered from the Great Recession in 2008. Besides, the social impacts of the shutdown did not reach the expectation of the Republicans, particularly about Obamacare.
