Abstract: ABSTRACT In the tragic life and love of the man named Jay Gatsby, the presence of the narrator Nick Carraway is inevitable. People tend to use him as a tool to take a deeper look at Gatsby’s characteristics. However, the vice versa, which means using Gatsby as a tool to define the narrator, was hardly noticed. In this thesis, based on critical judgments of many critics as well as the researcher’s own point of view, the character Nick Carraway is analyzed in his relationship and interaction with other characters in the book, especially the character Jay Gatsby, for the readers to understand and read about him with a broader and deeper perspective. Besides, the researcher also shows the evidence to prove that Nick Carraway is the most suitable and best narrator for this story. Furthermore, this works is contributed to the teachers and students who want to have an insight look into the book in general and the character in particular.
