Abstract: As other basic grammar structures, concessive clauses play an important role in English. The use of concessive clauses, therefore, has certain impact on the efficiency of English acquisition by learners. This thesis aims at analyzing the current status of use of concessive clauses by third year students at FELTE, ULIS, VNU, hoping to have deeper insights into the issue of concessive clauses and to help students better utilize this knowledge. Data for the study were collected from 100 participants from FELTE, ULIS, VNU by using questionnaires and academic literature essays. Statistical figures showed that students have certain positive awareness to the importance of concessive clauses, using them widely and frequently. Although many students had no difficulty in using concessive clauses, a large number of students found it challenging when utilizing them. Specifically, uncommon concessive structures and the possible alternation of “But” clauses appeared to be the most popular problems for students when using concessive clauses. In the final place, limitations of the thesis and suggestion for further study are presented.
