Abstract: Unwed mothers have been considered to be an abnormal and threatening existence throughout all these times in South Korea and also a social problem to the society. But today, family patterns have faced a rapid changed in its structure so unwed mothers gradually escape from the social regulation, acquire their independent position then establish themselves as a new family model. All such phenomenon is caused not only by the rapid fluctuation in social structure but also on another side, by a huge change in perception of unwed mothers that leads to continual resistance and negotiation process. This paper tries to find out the transition of family system and its influence to the unwed mothers in South Korea. Similarly to the Western society, as well as in Korean society, the family and labor market has already gone through a huge transition process. Hence, the government needs to recognize these characters of family and furthermore, the government should focus on the gender problem in forming the family policy. :
