CROSS-LINGUISTIC INFLUENCE OF L2 ENGLISH ON L3 KOREAN IN TERMS OF WORD ORDER AS PERCEIVED BY ULIS FRESHMEN =

Abstract

ABSTRACT As a result of the internationalization and integration process among different countries in the worlds, multilingualism is now probably considered as a norm. In Viet Nam, the number of people who are learning a third language has been increasing accordingly. Korean is one of the favorite languages among Vietnamese; however, it is considered difficult because its word order contradicts to other languages including Vietnamese and English. Additionally, the contrastive analysis between English and Korean has not been exploited much in Viet Nam, which offers a gap for the researcher to conduct a study on this topic. The aim of this research is to examine linguistic influences between L2 English and L3 Korean in terms of word order evidenced by their L3 production. There are four instruments used in the research: observation, questionnaire, testing and interview. The participants of the study are freshmen who come from a L3 Korean class at ULIS . After analyzing the results from all the instruments, the study comes to a conclusion that L2 English have influenced the students’ Korean learning at different rates in terms of word order, proved by word order mistakes relates to Korean complex sentences, Noun-modifying endings, adverbs and unit of measurements. Besides, the study also suggests some learning methods which applied effectively on some participants. Three main ways of learning have been found are practicing, learning by heart and breaking Korean phrase into smaller parts.
